Spring Presidential Lecture Series Announced at Suffolk County Community College 3/21/17

SCCC Presidential Lecture Series 2017-3-13

March 13, 2017

TO:                  The College Community

FROM:           Dr. Shaun L. McKay, President

SUBJECT:     Spring Presidential Lecture Series Announced

I am pleased to announce the third Presidential Lecture Series to be presented at Suffolk County Community College.  This forum is meant to engage the college community in meaningful conversations that can inspire each of us to bring about positive change in our communities.  It also provides the College with an opportunity to meet its mission-related strategic goal of enhancing community enrichment through increased participation in social and cultural events and activities conducted by the College or in partnership with external stakeholders.

This semester’s presentation is entitled, “Bursting Bubbles, Building Bridges: How can we bring the world into clear focus?” and will be delivered by Alisa Miller, CEO of Public Radio International.   The lecture will be held on Tuesday, March 21st at 11 a.m. in the Van Nostrand Theatre, Sagtikos Building, on the Michael J. Grant Campus. Additional presentations will be held on the Eastern Campus at 8 a.m. in the Montaukett Learning Resource Center, Room 107/108 and on the Ammerman Campus at 2 p.m. in the Southampton Building, Room 30.

Ms. Alisa Miller was named CEO of Public Radio International in 2006 and is the first female and youngest CEO of the network.  She serves as an advocate for the importance of global perspectives in the news and recently launched the Across Women’s Lives Initiative to increase news coverage and engagement around global women’s issues.  She has been named among the Most Influential Women in Technology, serves as a board member for the Lumina Foundation, and has been recognized for her TED Talk “How the news distorts our world view,” which has been viewed 1.7 million times.  She has additional TED Talks on why we need more women represented in the media and is author of Media Makeover.

No tickets are necessary.  If you would like to reserve space for your entire class, or for more information about the presentations, please contact Patty Munsch at munschp@sunysuffolk.edu.
