SUBJECT:     New Online Career Portal- Purple Briefcase – Launched at the College

The Office of Career Services is proud to announce the availability of Purple Briefcase.  This online career platform allows employers to connect with Suffolk’s students and alumni as they search for career and internship opportunities. It also offers an extensive range of support services like career chat, videos, networking tips and other tools to help students and alumni that are engaged in the job search process. In alignment with Institutional Goal #1-Student Success, this is an advanced career networking and planning tool that will support individuals in finding a great position that will further develop their skills and work experience.

Purple Briefcase will be an important resource for information about career-related events and career exploration tools. Students will be able to develop individual profiles focused on their interests, skills, and career aspirations. The profile will also serve as their online resume for potential employers. Most importantly, Purple Briefcase is the main platform that the College will now use to post internships, job opportunities, and other important career information. We encourage everyone to visit the new site and learn more at www.sunysuffolk.edu/purplebriefcase.

For further information on how you may use this program and integrate this tool as part of your courses with our students, please do not hesitate to contact Tania Velazquez ’96, College Director for Career Services, at velazqt@sunysuffolk.edu.

Eastern Campus to Host American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk – Sunday, October 23, 2016

Strides Sccc 2016-7-22

Suffolk County Community College, the Suffolk Community College Foundation and the American Cancer Society are working together to bring breast cancer awareness to the Long Island community.  On Sunday, October 23, 2016 the Eastern Campus will be hosting the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.  Approximately 4,000 individuals will walk around “Ring Road” and unite as a community to raise awareness about the steps you can take to reduce the risk of getting breast cancer.

Additionally, we are happy to announce that through this partnership the Foundation has created the first endowed “Breast Cancer Survivor’s and Caregiver’s Scholarship.” This scholarship will be awarded to a Suffolk student who is a survivor or has been a caregiver to someone impacted by breast cancer.

When communities participate in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks they are helping those currently fighting the disease, those who may have to fight it one day, and those who will avoid a diagnosis due to education and risk reduction.  When it comes to breast cancer, no one should walk alone.  We encourage our college community members to form a team, join a team, walk as an individual or bring a friend to the Eastern Campus. For more information or details about registering please contact Russell Malbrough at 631-451-4630.

Together we can make a difference in our community.

This conference will leverage SUNY investments in student success and diversity while exploring best practices in recruitment and retention of students, faculty and staff within the domain of higher education.

We invite you to share the “Save the Date” card with your faculty and staff. Also included is the “Call for Proposals” letter which provides details on the submission of proposals for workshop and poster presentations focusing on the following seven strands:

  1. Building an Accessible System for Students, Faculty, Staff and Administrators
  2. Strategies for Success for Students, Faculty, Staff and Administrators
  3. Campus and Community Climate
  4. Strategic Diversity Leadership
  5. Inclusion is an Action Word
  6. Social Justice, Activism and Critical Pedagogy
  7. Teaching and Learning through Film/Video and Social Media.

We would be delighted to have your support on our Twitter page (@SUNYDiversity) where we will promote diversity and information about this conference.

We are thrilled to have Dr. Damon Williams (Senior Vice President of Programs, Training and Youth Development for the Boys and Girls Club of America), Dr. Eduardo Bonilla-Silva (Professor of Sociology at Duke University), and Dr. Nancy “Rusty” Barcelo (retired President of Northern New Mexico College (NNMC), join us as our three keynote speakers at this conference. For more information on this event, please visit our website at www.suny.edu/2016diversityconference.

We hope you will be able to join us for this seminal conference as we collaborate and share best practices that will continue to help SUNY grow in this critical dimension.
